Hi Everybody,
Hope all is well.
HEADLINE NEWS ==>
Over the past few days, I have been finding ways to cut corners in order to keep the web site operational and keep the annual costs minimal. I have succeeded :-) This year, operation costs were high due to the fact that I had to move to a new web hosting provider, therefore setup fees were incurred, application fees for copyright registration, and various other expenses - expenses that I shouldn't incur again.
The web site went offline in January, that is the
domain name registrations expired and requests to be listed on the web site,
piled up like you wouldn't believe. During the months of December and January, I was on vacation visiting family and shortly after returning home in February, my mom had a heart attack and had to have double bypass surgery. So again, the web site was left untouched for another month. No more than a week after my mom's return home from her three week stay at the hospital, she was re-hospitalized due to complications arising from the surgery. She had another week in the hospital. My mom is slowly on the mend, but again, due to more complications, her recovery has been very slow. It was not until June that I was able to reestablish the Congressional Page Association web site and devote the attention it required. Now it's August (almost September) and we are back, better than before!
NUMBERS ON THE RISE ==>
The Congressional Page Association's official roster stands at 217 former Pages and counting! The Association web site has truly served future Pages in a way that I never imaged. I realized this after receiving an email from a soon-to-be Page writing:
"I am going to be a Congressional Page for the
2002-2003 school year. In fact, I leave Saturday. I would like to thank you for your web site. Although I didn't know about it until after I found out I was accepted, your web
site has linked me to kids that I will be going to DC with this year."
With newbie Pages visiting the site to find more
information about Paging, they sign the guestbook, indicating that they will be a Page soon, and other new Pages, also visiting the site for information about their upcoming adventure read the guestbook, and boom - Houston, we have contact!
MEMBERS ==> the Association needs your help ...
1. Questions and Answers
You remember when you first received word of your
Page acceptance - I'm sure you, like me, had many questions running through your mind. I'm in the process of compiling a Q & A section comprising of questions and answers to those
questions that new Pages may have and need answers too. I need your questions and ANSWERS :-) The questions can be
anything from, "What kind of ties are they - traditional or clip-on?" to "When kids are coming home, as for Christmas and spring break, do they all head for the airport together, or does each student have to arrange for taxi?" <--- I need an answer to this one! :-) Please send your questions and answers to billy@congressionalpage.org
2. Where Are You Today
Former Pages, the question is, where are you today?
I'm working on another section of the web site titled, "Former Pages TODAY" or
something along those lines -- if you have a snapper title, email me! Evan Whitney did a wonderful job "Where Are they Now" summary in the guestbook. By the way, Evan, may I include your guestbook entry in the new section? Other ideal content for this section would be about former Page's lives like so and so had a baby or so and so moved to anywhere, etc. Please send your "Former Pages TODAY" submissions to billy@congressionalpage.org
2001-2002 PAGES ==>
The web site, as you can see, is a little out of date. For one, House pages moved into a new dorm. I would appreciate you telling me about the new dorm, what it looks like, how kind of furnishings are included, etc. Also, if you have picture of the dorm, that would be wonderful too.
The web site really needs pictures and descriptions
of the new dorm at 501 1st SE where you will be living during your term. Also, pictures that you took around Capitol Hill, including pictures that you took
while inside the US Capitol building would be great too. Also, your descriptions and opinions of how the Page program operates are needed. Your contributions are vital and very much appreciated. Please send your contributions to billy@congressionalpage.org and please remember, you will receive full credit for your contributions.
I believe this is the longest letter I have written
to anyone in my entire life -- so feel special :-)
I hope to hear from you!
Best regards,
