Being a Page is an exceptational experience that does involve some long work hours, but is truly worth any pain that results from it (the sore feet).
Here is a general overview of the main duties of a Page.
- ANNEX II PAGE
- Two pages are designated daily
- Annex II is the Ford Building
- Pages answer incoming calls and load packages onto the shuttle bus that travels to the Capitol
- CLOAKROOM PAGE
- Six Pages designated daily
- Pages answer Member’s telephone calls while they are on the House Floor and
track Members down when they receive an important telephone call. Pages basically act as secretaries for the Members.
- This is a very important job and probably is the most prestigious as a Page has
the opportunity to interact with Members of Congress one on one -- even famous politicians like Vice President Cheney are known to drop by on occasions.
- DOCUMENTARIAN PAGE
- Two Pages are designated daily
- Pages take care of ringing all the bells for votes, going into and out of session
- Manage the House Chamber flag by putting up the flag up which indicates the
House is in session and takes the flag down when the House is out of session.
- These Pages are commonly seen on C-SPAN as they sit on the right side of the Stage, opposite of the Parliamentarian’s desk.
- FLAG PAGE
- Three Pages are designated daily.
- These Pages deliver carts full of boxed flags to one of the three House Office Buildings (the Page’s choice - first come first served).
- First Page must record the serial number and office destination of each flag,
load them onto the carts, and head off to the Office Building, maneuvering your way through hordes of people (don’t forget that you have to take the elevator - another daunting task).
- Benefit: Once finished, the Page gets to go home. Usually, Flag Pages finish between 11 AM and 1 PM.
- FLOOR PAGE
- Two Pages are designated daily.
- One of the twoPages must remain on the House Floor at all times to be of assistance to any Member requesting their service.
- Page may have to go to the “Stage” to pick up a document from one of the Clerks that needs to be delivered to a Member’s office.
- Meet the shuttle bus to pickup documents and deliver them to the Page Desk.
The shuttle bus is a transport vihicle that brings people and packages from Annex II to the Capitol.
- RUNNER
- Page delivers envelops, small packages, and boxed flags between the various offices within the Capitol complex.
- Nice job to have because a Page has the opportunity to explore the Capitol complex (as well as getting lost too!).
- SPEAKER PAGE
- Two Pages are stationed in the Speaker’s Office.
- Answer incoming calls and assist the Speaker’s staff.
- Very nice job to have!
